Cartridge-equipped devices perform a start-up self-test to verify that audible and visual notifications are operational. The device self-tests LEDs, audible notification, vibrations, and the microphone in sequence during start-up.

During start-up, visual indicators may be briefly suppressed for up to five seconds, with only audio feedback active during that time. Failure of any output during the self-test indicates a fault condition and should be reported.
