Device Data Management Reference
Blackline Safety's connected devices monitor the safety of workers, detect gas exposures, and increase productivity through business intelligence tools, reporting, and data science. Blackline's devices communicate directly with Blackline Live using cellular or satellite connectivity. Our connected safety devices collect and communicate data on configured according to our System Access service plan.
Data generated by G8, G7, G6, and EXO devices has three primary purposes:
- Providing situational awareness for monitoring personnel and responders in an emergency.
- Communicating data to provide compliance reporting.
- Storing data for analysis, business intelligence, and data science.
Key Terms
| Gas Readings | Low-level gas readings below the organization's gas alarm thresholds. Gas readings at this level are shown on the device display, but do not notify the user with lights, sounds, or vibrations. These gas readings do initiate a change in data collection for analytics. |
| Event | Any occurrence on a G8, G7, G6, and EXO device outside of normal operation. Events include emergency events, such as SOS alerts, as well as non-emergency events, such as check-in reminders. |
| Notifications hautement urgentes | Notifications that are immediately communicated to Blackline Live. The following events can trigger high urgency notifications on G8, G7, G6, and EXO devices:
|
| Blackline Live | Blackline Safety's cloud-hosted web application for alert monitoring and device management. Devices can be configured, monitored, and notified from Blackline Live. The most recent data from each device is communicated to and displayed in Blackline Live. |
| G8 | Blackline's next generation wearable personal safety device that uses cellular networks to establish communication with Blackline Live. G8 devices can be fitted with a lone worker, single- or multi-gas sensor cartridge. |
| G7c | A wearable personal safety device that uses cellular networks to establish communication with Blackline Live. G7c devices can be fitted with a lone worker, single- or multi-gas sensor cartridge. |
| G7x | A cellular/satellite connected wearable safety device. G7x uses G7 Bridge to establish communication with Blackline Live. The frequency and duration of data communication vary based on whether G7 Bridge is connected via cellular or satellite networks. |
| G6 | A wearable single-gas detector that uses cellular networks to establish communication with Blackline Live. |
| EXO 8 | Blackline's next generation connected area monitor. EXO 8 is connected via cellular communication by default but can be upgraded for satellite communication. Changes in the method of communication affects the frequency of data capture. |
| G7 EXO | Blackline's connected area monitor. G7 EXO is connected via cellular communication by default but can be upgraded for satellite communication. Changes in the method of communication affects the frequency of data capture. |
Blackline Live Maps Page
Blackline Live uses the Maps page to display the most recent communication from G8, G7, G6, and EXO devices. Data displayed on the Blackline Live Maps page includes the last message sent by the device, the location of the device (GPS coordinates and approximate address), gas and gamma (EXO 8 only) readings, and communication details.
Devices communicate with Blackline Live on a configured schedule. Events can trigger immediate communication to Blackline Live. The following chart displays the default communication frequency for all G8, G7, and EXO device types.
| G7 | G8 | EXO | |||
| G7c | G7x | Mobile | Satellite | ||
| Fonctionnement normal | 5 minutes | 30 minutes | 5 minutes | 30 minutes | 2 hours |
| In Motion | 30 secondes | 30 minutes | |||
| Notification State | 10 seconds | 5 minutes | 10 seconds | 5 minutes | 5 minutes |
| During Events | Immédiatement | Immédiatement | Immédiatement | Immédiatement | Immédiatement |
The delivery time of device events to Blackline Live can vary depending on the type and quality of connectivity. Median delivery times are 3 seconds for cellular connectivity and 85 seconds for satellite connectivity.
After an event or notification, devices continue their normal operation communication frequency.
After an event, G7x continues its normal operation communication frequency. After a high urgency notification is triggered, G7x will begin communicating with Blackline Live every five minutes for one hour.
Blackline Analytics
Blackline Analytics displays historical data from G8, G7, G6, and EXO devices. Devices capture data on a pre-set schedule. Specific events can trigger a change in data capture frequency. The following chart displays the default data capture frequency for all G8, G7, and EXO device types:
| G7 | G8 | EXO | ||||
| G7c | G7x Satellite | G7x Cellular | Mobile | Satellite | ||
| Fonctionnement normal | 5 minutes | 30 minutes | 5 minutes | 30 minutes | 2 hours (stationary) | |
| 10 seconds (optional) | 10 seconds (optional) | 10 seconds (optional) | 30 minutes (in motion) | |||
| Événements | All events triggers data collection for all analytical purposes | |||||
| When Gas is Present | 10 seconds | 1 minute | 30 minutes | 10 seconds | 10 seconds | 2 minutes |
A 10-second data collection can be configured for Blackline Analytics. Contact Blackline Safety's Technical Support team to discuss the appropriate setting for your organization.
Forensic Data Review
In addition to the data captured for analytics, all G8, G7, G6, EXO devices store logs of the past 22 hours of device usage on internal memory. These logs consist of trace gas readings and location data at 10 second resolution. In the event of a serious incident requiring investigation, Blackline Safety recommends powering down any devices involved as soon as the incident is resolved. Contact Blackline Safety's Technical Support team to assist with retrieving the data you require for your investigation.
Working Outside of Cellular Coverage
G8, G7, G6, and EXO users may occasionally work outside of wireless coverage. In these cases, all data is stored on non-volatile memory on the device and communicated to Blackline Live when a connection is reestablished.
Blackline API
Blackline's APIs send the most recent communication from Blackline Safety devices to external systems. Data is available in the APIs immediately following device communication. The data communicated through Blackline's APIs can include event data, user information, gas type and readings, and location data.
