Improved Handling of Unsupported Characters in Blackline Live

Blackline Safety released a software update on February 17, 2026, that fixed an issue where configuration profile changes in Blackline Live were not sent to devices when the configuration profile contained characters that aren't supported by devices. Characters that aren't supported include non-Latin scripts (for example, Japanese and Cyrillic) and non‑ASCII characters. Unsupported characters are most commonly found in the following areas of Blackline Live configuration profiles:

  • Device configuration profiles

  • Device names

  • Assigned user names

  • Available messages

When any configuration profile fields contained unsupported characters, the device configuration status remained pending and the changes were not sent to devices.

After this update, configuration profile changes that contain unsupported characters are sent to devices successfully, and the device configuration status in Blackline Live now shows as active.

Unsupported Characters On Devices

Blackline Safety devices are unable to display unsupported characters on the screen. If your configuration profile includes pre-programmed messages that use unsupported characters, they won't be in the list of messages that you can send. Blackline Live replaces the messages that use unsupported characters with the original default message. See the table below for default messages for Blackline Safety devices:

If you have the Display assigned user on device option enabled in Blackline live, the device will display the following fields:

  • First name

  • Last name

  • Employee ID

If these fields contain unsupported characters, they will not display on the device..
