Fall Detection and No Motion - Explained
Blackline Safety G7 and G8 devices are equipped with the ability to detect if a user has fallen (fall detection) or is motionless for a period of time (no-motion detection). These features can be turned on, off, and can be configured from the device's configuration profile in Blackline Live.

How does fall detection work?
Blackline Safety devices are equipped with an accelerometer and gyroscopes that can detect if a user has fallen. Blackline has an advanced algorithm that uses a combination of acceleration and movement in different directions to detect a fall. We've tested the algorithm against real-world falls instead of just testing against g-force movement to improve accuracy.
How does Blackline attempt to avoid false alerts?
To avoid false alerts for detected falls, our algorithm doesn't trigger an alarm if it detects only a vertical, or only a horizontal impact. This prevents users from triggering false alerts when they might be jumping off machinery, or performing similar activities.
How do I configure this in Blackline Live?
You can configure fall-detection settings in G6's configuration profile in Blackline Live.
If you're performing physical tasks during your every day shift, such as jumping off machinery, increase the fall impact percentage to prevent false alerts. If you are doing less physical tasks, such as desk work, decrease your fall impact percentage.
No-Motion Detection
How does no-motion detection work?
Blackline devices are equipped with gyroscopes and an accelerometer to determine if a user has stopped moving. If your device doesn't detect movement for the no-motion period (configured in Blackline Live), the device will issue a low-urgency notification.
How do I reduce false alerts?
To prevent false no-motion alerts, your Blackline Live organization admin can configure the no-motion detection settings in Blackline Live so that it matches the type of work you're performing. Never leave your device unattended while it's powered on.
How does an organization admin configure this in Blackline Live?
Blackline Live organization admins can configure no-motion settings in the device's configuration profile. Log into Blackline Live, and then visit the Configurations page. Select a configuration, then select Functional Settings. Scroll down to view the no-motion detection settings.
The no-motion period is the time that the device can remain motionless before it issues a low-urgency notification. If you're moving less in your daily activities, such as sitting at a desk or driving a vehicle, set a longer no-motion period and a lower movement percentage. If you're performing physical activities and moving a lot during your day, set a shorter no-motion period higher movement percentage.
How do low-urgency and high-urgency notifications affect no-motion detection?
If your device issues a low-urgency or high-urgency notification and vibration is enabled, the vibration resets the no-motion timer. This does not reduce safety monitoring. If the user does not acknowledge a low-urgency notification, it escalates to a high-urgency notification. If high-urgency notifications are not acknowledged by the user, the device alerts designated responders.
